'Oh?' Gently he lifted her into her arms and carried her to the bed. 'Why not?'

She waited till he was lying close beside her before she answered him. 'Because I'm going to have your child, Adam. In about seven months' time.'

A look of total amazement crossed his face, to be followed by such blazing joy that Julia had no need to ask if he were pleased.

'Oh, darling,' he said huskily. 'My dearest beloved darling.' Leaning over her, he reverently pressed his lips to her brow. 'Then you knew about it when I said I wanted a divorce?'

'Yes. It was the very day I'd been to see the doctor. I'd come home to tell you the news—I was hoping it would help us start our marriage afresh—and then you said you wanted me to go.'

He groaned and caught her in such a fierce grip that she winced. 'You must have thought me the biggest swine alive,' he muttered. 'If only you'd given me a hint of what had happened!'

'I thought you'd guess.' She stroked his hair, enjoying the knowledge that she no longer had to hide her desire for him. 'You're a potent man, my darling, and once or twice you took me by surprise.'

Raising himself slightly, he peered into her eyes. 'Do you mind about the baby, Julia?'

'What a crazy question! Why should I?'

'I only meant—because it wasn't conceived with love.'

'But it was. I've loved you for months, my darling, and you've just admitted you felt the same. The only trouble was that neither of us said so.'

'It's a deficiency I intend making up for,' he said, his voice unexpectedly urgent. 'I love you with my life, Julia, and I'll spend my life showing you exactly how much.'

'Could you begin now?' she asked teasingly, twining her hands around his neck and pulling him down on top of her.

'With pleasure,' he said thickly. 'With infinite, wonderful pleasure.'
